Motability – How does it work?

Motability is a registered charity, which helps disabled people and their families in the UK to become more mobile.

It was set up on the initiative of the Government in 1977 to provide vehicles to disabled people. Terms have been arranged with motor manufacturers, wheelchair and vehicle adaptation suppliers and insurance companies so that a scheme could be offered that enables people with disabilities to become more mobile.

To participate in the scheme you have to give up your allowance, and pay an Advance Payment, where applicable whether you are on: Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or War Pensions Supplement (WPMS).

No waiting lists. No credit checks. No assessments required.

95% of our customers choose to lease a car through Motability's Contract Hire agreement, which gives you:

  • A new car of your choice every 3 years
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over three years
  • Insurance and personal accident cover
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Full breakdown assistance from RAC
  • Annual Road Fund Licence

The Motability Managed Adaptations Programme has made it easier than ever to choose adaptations for your Motability car, often at no additional cost. When you tell a friend, or relative, about the Motability Car Scheme and they decide to join, we will send you £25 to say thank you. And, we'll also send your friend £25: a welcome gift from us. Just 'pass it on'.

So if you are an existing customer, all you need to do is:

Print the voucher and write your name and Motability car registration in the space provided.

Pass the voucher on to a friend who is eligible to obtain a car through the Motability Contract Hire Scheme.

Once your friend or relative has selected a new car, they will need to pass the voucher to their Motability Specialist when they place their order and he will look after the rest.

Once your friend has collected their brand new car, we will send you each a cheque for £25. No extra questions and no hassle, just a simple thank you payment.

You have told us it's a great Scheme, now 'pass it on' to your friends. They will wish you had told them sooner.

Terms & Conditions for Motability Tell a Friend Cheque: This promotion only applies to Contract Hire customers. Vouchers must be presented to an authorised dealer between 01.06.2009 and 31.05.2010. The existing customer and the new customer will each receive the cheque for £25 within 28 days of the following: (1) the delivery of the car to the new customer and (2) receipt of the ‘Recommend a Friend’ voucher. Vouchers will not be accepted where the new customer has been a customer of Motability Operations (MO) within 6 months prior to the day the car is delivered to them. Incomplete or illegible vouchers will not be processed. The payment for each new application using this promotion is £25 for the new customer and £25 for the existing customer who recommends them.
